We received our first taste of the new M5 Concept during the weekend thanks to a series of photos that leaked from a press event in Germany, but today, BMW came out with an official release detailing its sports saloon ahead of its world premiere at the Auto Shanghai 2011 in China later this month. The Concept M5 is essentially 99 percent production ready, so don’t expect any surprises in terms of styling at the presentation of the production model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year. The highlight of the fifth generation of the M5 will be the new twin-turbocharged V8 engine lurking under the bonnet. BMW officials have already confirmed that the engine is a development of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 555HP and 680Nm or 501 lb-ft of peak torque, tweaked to deliver more power. However, the German company is still keeping mum on output numbers. What BMW did disclose is that compared to the fourth generation of the M5’s 507HP V10 power unit, the newly developed V8 turbo has a significantly increased output level, whilst at the same time lowering previous fuel consumption and emission levels by at least 25 percent. In the new M5, power is delivered to the rear wheels by a seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, which was specifically tuned to the new V8 engine’s performance characteristics. A new BMW. -Info- Judging by the white paint with the black racing stripes over the top length of the car, these leaked images are likely to be the 2012 1-Series M-Sport Package spied earlier this month. But, according to 1addicts, BMW is calling this the “BMW Performance Studie 1-Series”, performance study, which is to say it is like a concept for a performance variant that is still not ready to make it to the dealer showrooms just yet. The car was, in fact, at a dealer presentation when these photos were snapped and leaked. The model is sporting new front and rear bumpers that are different from the simpler M-Package 1-Series BMW unveiled just after the new generation 1er was introduced, but similar to those of the aforementioned spy photos. BMW is likely prepping this car for a debut at the Frankfurt motor show which is promising to be bigger than ever this year.

Here are some more images of the Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class released by the automaker upon the model’s introduction at the Shanghai motor show today. We get to see more of that aviation-influenced interior design as well as photos of the concept on the road. The Concept A-Class comes with a new M270-based power plant - a 2.0 liter turbocharged, four-cylinder unit with 155 kW / 210 PS (207 bhp). Being a Merc, tech goodies are in abundance and those include LED high-performance headlights, radar-based collision warning system, adaptive Brake Assist and, of course, BlueEFFICIENCY for optimizing fuel-economy. We’re not sure how closely this Concept A-Class will resemble the next-generation of that model. It’s hard to predict given how much things are changing in this segment. BMW is developing several new front-wheel drive models that will compete directly against the likes of the A-Class. But this Concept A-Class looks very much like the kind of sporty hatch that Mercedes would want at the core of this segment - perhaps with other models or body-style variants filling niche gaps elsewhere.
