3-5/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub

Filed under: suzuki — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , — admin @ 10:06 am

In this 5th episode of the 3rd series we firstly hear Producer Suzuki talking about how a miracle occurred a few months before the film Princess Mononoke’s premiere around when they were so much behind on their animation procedures. Next appears Miwa the Great - Akihiro MIWA is a chanson singer, actor-actress, artist with an unmistakable aura, also widely known as the first significant Japanese boy (and was he beautiful!!) who came out to the world as a gay. He used to sing at a literary bar and be engaged in the plays of Yukio Mishima’s, working with Mishima himself. Miyazaki explains to Miwa beforehand about his image of Moro, the Wolf God, symbolising complexity and the great power of the nature itself, as never a simpleton advocator with ”Let’s protect our dear green!” message or such, because, according to Director, the nature definitely has its tremendously brutal, savage side though containing the great mother’s divinity all the same. Miwa then replies with the Buddhist’s concept of Bodhisattva (the fully enlightened one; 菩薩) , whose shadow image is thought to be Acala (the immovable king icon; 不動明王). All Acala statues have a scary look because, according to Miwa, an Acala could be even more demonic than a demon itself if a person he’s facing with has a malicious heart, but otherwise the stand-still king icon gives benevolence. All in all, we’ll be sure to enjoy the mature conversations between Miyazaki and Miwa! Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ;

In this 12th episode of the 2nd series, first we see Ghibli Producer Toshio Suzuki and the other PR reps. get together for a meeting to talk about the upcoming issues such as voice casts and the counter-tenor singer Yoshikazu Mera (米良美一)who’s to sing Mononoke’s theme song. Also, Producer Suzuki reports what kind of reactions he sensed from the American audience seen Mononoke’s trailer while he was in the United States for the negotiations with the Disney. Then, there’s another interesting theory of Miyazaki’s pops out which insists that while the Western tend to percept an object as a piece of block, the Eastern are more likely to see it as a combination of the lines. Next, Miyazaki explains to a Genga animator Minowa-san that the spiral patterns Shishigami (Forest God) has represent the circulative law of lives, whirling image of fluid, extending image of growing ivies….thus, non-stoppable power of lives, in a word. Then the topics switch to be on Jigobo’s basic characteristics…which seem to be as complicated as those of Eboshi’s since the both look so non- stereo-typical…All the same, it sounds quite easy to understand when explained by Miyazaki, according to whom, Jigobo’s personality isn’t an evil one at all and he IS one cheerful guy actually. Director mutters Jigobo’s and the other three’s comical run-away scene might not be fully recognisable as so comedic without the knowledge of old-fashioned comedy films. Lastly enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ;

2-6/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub

In this 6th episode of the 2nd series, we see Ghibli Producer Toshio Suzuki throws a question whether the PR side should provide with a slogan of ”A Grande Spectacle” so easily, so irresponsibly in a superficial level….since, according to him, a true grande spectacle movie should have rich story contents/ motifs that attract the audience and eventually make a hit. Suzuki confesses that around the time they were making ”Racoons’ Battle in Heisei Era(「平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ」; released in 1994)” they had changed their basic principle not to compete with enormously budgeted Holloywood’s huge production movies but rather to caricature reality from a misertable, pitiful, helpless standpoint. This time, however, Ghibli seems to be ready to prove the audience that Princess Mononoke couldn’t be just another Anime stuff by showing the ”hard-boiled brutal” side of the nature that Nausicaa missed to be able to depict 13 years before. Later, we witness Miyazaki’s commuting style as a Porco Rosso popped out in reality but there’s this another fact that Miyazaki’s been living on the simplest, most old-fashioned food by always bringing his lunchbox (that his wife prepares but Miyazaki does fix his lunchbox when she’s not available) for decades. (Miyazaki seems to be famous for not eating out fancy food.) Lastly, the reporting crew sneak in and place a tiny camera at the corner of Miyazaki’s work desk so that we could witness how he is really like while he’s working. Enjoy this
