Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid to Arrive in 2010

If anything else, we have to hand it to GM for at least trying to create a variety of products that confront the energy problems and the changing U.S. market. Aside from the Chevy Volt that we hear about every two or three days (…), GM is also working on another plug-in hybrid vehicle that has been approved for production and is undergoing early program development stages as we speak. We’re referring to the Saturn Vue (Opel Antara in Europe) PHEV which stands for plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle.

Currently, GM is testing 11 Saturn Vue plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles at the GM proving grounds in Michigan and Arizona. GM says that while early test cars used nickel-metal hydride battery technology, now their trying out lithium-ion batteries which are lighter and more powerful.

Opel Corsa Hybrid Concept & Vectra FlexPower Debut In Frankfurt

GM’s European subsidiary Opel will debut two environmentally friendly models at the Frankfurt Show on September 11, the Corsa Hybrid Concept and the Vecta FlexPower equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo engine designed for operation with bioethanol/gasoline. Leaving the Vectra aside, the Corsa Hybrid is powered by GM’s next-generation Hybrid system which uses a lithium-ion battery and a 75Hp 1.3 CDTI diesel engine. This combination of a diesel engine and electric generator results to an avg. fuel consumption of just 3.75l per 100 km (62.7 mpg) while CO2 emissions are reduced to 99 grams of CO2 per km.

Citroen Officially Considering Producing 83mpg Hybrid or All-Electric Version of C-Cactus

Citroen C-Cactus HybridProving that some unorthodox concept vehicles can make it into production if the timing is right, Citroen has made it official that it has embarked on a new project to look into the feasibility of producing an ultra-environmentally friendly vehicle based on the C-Cactus concept car that was presented at last year’s Frankfurt motorshow.

The French automaker said that it is considering a range of powerplants for it Cayenne-like faced C-Cactus including a 1.0-liter petrol engine with sub 100gr/km CO2 emissions; a HYmotion2 diesel-electric hybrid consuming 2.8lt/100km (83.2mpg US / 100mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of just 78g/km or a zero emissions 100% electric model with a top speed and range of 112 km/h (70mph) and 160km (100 miles) respectively.

We’ve seen one too many hoaxes on the internet the past few years to hastily pass these pictures of the 2010 Toyota Prius from the Priuschat forums as being the real deal. However we must admit that, especially in what concerns the interior photos, there do look pretty convincing. Feel free to tell us what you think about their authenticity by leaving us a comment.

2010 Toyota Prius Officially, the third generation Prius that will compete head on with scheduled to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009, with worldwide sales following shortly after. Sources within Toyota have stated that the new hybrid model will be slightly larger in dimensions than the current Prius.

Hybrid System Costs to Drop More than 65% Over the Next Decade

Hybrid SystemsAs with any goods that pass the “tipping point” and become mainstream consumer products, manufacturing costs for automotive hybrid systems are bound to drop over the next few years. A report from JPMorgan Chase & Co that was released yesterday says that automakers may cut production costs for hybrid systems as much as 67% over the next decade as it is forecasted that the global market for hybrid vehicles will grow an amazing 16-fold to 9.6 million units over the same period representing a 10.2% stake of the overall market.
