www.euroncap.comFrontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver’s door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 29km/h into a rigid pole.

To build cars outside Japan with the same quality that has made Japanese cars dominant worldwide has been something that has been challenging. Workers in other countries have different attitudes and while they can produce high quality work, consistency is not always possible. And for the Japanese, consistency is very important as is constant improvement. But now they have managed to achieve a certain degree of success and have begun to establish production hubs in Asian countries. For example, Mitsubishi, Toyota and Isuzu export pick-ups from Thailand and Toyota exports MPVs from Indonesia, while Suzuki has built a huge plant in India to produce certain models for global markets. One of these Suzuki models is the Alto which was officially launched today in Malaysia. It’s the first Japanese model in a long time to be priced so low — under RM50,000 — and it comes in completely built-up (CBU) form from India. At that price level, it will certainly attract the attention of some of the buyers who were thinking of a Proton or Perodua but that’s not the aim of Suzuki Automobiles Malaysia (SMA). Mindful of how certain parties view any model that can compete with Proton as a threat, Dato Sri Haji Khamil Jamil, SMA’s Chairman, was quick to state that the new Alto is not intended to compete with Proton or Perodua.
