SUZUKI GS 450E.. ugly ugly noise
that’s my old GS, direcly from the ’80s, after a “little” make up of the engine and other parts.. unfortunately you can hear a bad noise from the crankcase, and the only solution is to open it and check the pieces.. too hard, not for me!!! so, I want to hold as it is.. ok, see you on this roads, in Italy. byebye
great bike i just bought one and it is an prfect 80′ bike ! great ride

dont ride it if your motor makes odd sounds. i Had my gs850 lock the rear tire right up on me doing about 55, now that almost bad. somehow managed to stay up though

Inspect and adjust the valves, clean the pilot and main jets out in the carbs. Check your plugs are clean and in good order.

I think you are right.. I was watching the Haynes service manual few months ago, and seems setting the valve clearance could fix the problem.(I saw on troubleshooting )
i tried to sync the carbs in the past, but having got any good result on this matter..
anyway, I can back to the new owner to ask news!:-)
thanks a lot for help! ciao. Sasà

ASE certified mechanic here, and a former gs450t owner. ADJUST THE VALVES!!! They have an extreme amount of clearance and are causing poor starting, poor idleing and poor performance. Trust me, 25 years wrenching bikes. Also, sync the carbs while you have it in as this beautiful bike has been neglected as far as maintenance. You won’t believe the difference. Tracy

float got stuck on my tractor, the engine flooded and i couldnt figure out why it didnt start, im lucky it didnt though otherwise byebye cylinder heads
Comment by WC9456 — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
Haha, well, I’m not a mechanic, but the guy that rebuilt the carbs on mine told me that from the carb being blocked the gas got dumped into the cylinder, which meant it didn’t have any compression because it was full of gas. I think the float was sticking. I don’t know, sometimes something that seems stupid ends up helping figure out what the problem is, or at least eliminate what it isn’t.

how do u work that out? carbs have nothing to do with cylinder presure
Comment by aaadogman — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
A blocked carb could also cause it to not have compression.

i suppose, but i thought the ignition coils aplified the voltage (made a larger voltage) so it was enough to make it spark. but if your solution works, how does it go as a pattern? does it go stator to regulator to cdi and then to the coils?
Comment by GILLAZ10 — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
the rectifier is needed for battery charging.. I don’t think exists a stator connected directly to the cdi..I always seen the stator’s outputs connected to the rectifier.. check for wirings on a service manual, I think you cannot improvise with electricity.. also for high voltage circuits you have.. be carefully
Comment by ziopappagone — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
needed
Comment by GILLAZ10 — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
so what does the rectifier do, i thought that i only leeded the stator to the cdi, then to the coils?
Comment by GILLAZ10 — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
I don’t know very well the 250 engine.. but you may check for any question and wiring diagrams on a service manual, that you can easily find on emule.. anyway I think that only a rectifier might be needed… let me know:-)

hi i need help ALOT, i bought a gs250 engine off ebay and i need help with the wiring, its going into a kart and i only need it to spark , i have got the ignition coils and the stator works fine, what else will it need apart from a CDI? its a 1985 engine i think
Comment by GILLAZ10 — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
Sounds like the cam chain tensioner.

cool bike

may be the piston seal al least.. did you replace both spark plugs before?
every 5000 km a change its advised and you gonna spend 5$ for two.
check also the spark cable near the coil down the tank until the plug connector (by a continuity test with a multimeter). then you can try to clean the carbs by nitro or something else, and check the chain tensioner.. I only reduced the noise anjuusting the chain tensioner, but seems there is something else.. have luck!

ive just bought a bike on ebay , a gs450 ,apears to be making the same noise just turning over with no plugs in , its also got no compression on the right cylinder , did u find the problem? iam worried ive a dud piston or somthing
Comment by aaadogman — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
nice bike! might be timing chain slop!
Comment by wildmandazza — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
sounds like the clutch.. or the chain tensioner in the engine.
nothing to worry about, just fine as it is. But if you’re a perfectionist you could fix it.

Love that bike, ok little “hard” to drive and lean but I’ve made 1000s km: Italy, France, Croatia…
Comment by aristo4949 — March 2, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
If your carbs aren’t synched properly, it can cause the clutch plates to rattle which can sound ugly..Clean your carbs and sychronize them.

love this bike. Some oldies just don’t die.
