  2. systems science works within the framework of a material world, if not as simply mechanistic as Newtonian mechanics

  3. Quantumn mechanics is reductionism it is just unexpected results from reductionism which have illuminated the gaps in our understanding of the material universe. I understand there are implications but filling the gaps with some etherial geus work does not strike me as being very impresive. They certainly dont point to non materialist aproaches yeilding results.

  4. holism and systems theory. as Suzuki said,
it was motivated by physicists (especially of quantum mechanics) who found reductionism broke down and couldn’t explain the nature of reality. those ideas have application to ecology, cybernetics, and all fields of study. as the commenter stratvic said, elements of both approaches are needed

  5. ive got to be honest this idea that science is trying to reconstruct the world sounds suspicously flawed. its just trying to understand it. whats the alternative to reductionism understanding emergent properties through the i ching? sounds suspicously like a god of the gaps argument without the god bit. great speaker but not at all sure about his rational on that bit have to watch the rest.

  6. To understand a system you need to be both holistic and reductionist. Neither work on their own.

  7. It was a Penn and Teller prank at a environmentalist convention. They got well meaning people to sign a petition banning water by using scientifically accurate information about the properties of water.

There is a clip here on you tube. watch?v=yi3erdgVVTw
